Cathedrals showcased the work of Jeff Ray, a San Francisco Bay Area artist whose new media art invites us to consider both visual and emotional associations of the world around us. Inspired by the immediate surroundings of Northern California, Jeff Ray investigates natural and architectural structures using media/disciplines ranging from photography and sculpture to video collage, often pairing the artwork with original music. Whether creating flat or three-dimensional pieces, Ray’s own hand can be seen in the works. This is especially evident in his photographs, which receive countless hours of attention to apply geometric and linear patterns. The after-image applications act as a guide, taking our eyes across the plane to make visceral connections between natural and man-made elements.

The selection of pieces chosen for Cathedrals consisted of work from 2010 – 2016, focusing artist’s multi-disciplinary practice and how this transforms the artwork into rich objects imbued with personal, historical, and implied narratives. These elements become part of a vital connection between the artist, his work, and the process through visual and sonic communication.
